Staff Engineer - Cloud Platform Services 

About the role

This role is one of a team of senior engineers leading across our Cloud Platform Services teams at HashiCorp.  From Core Platform & Visibility to Identity/IAM and cloud-based Billing services, Cloud Platform Services (CPS) is responsible for delivering the PAAS backbone of the HashiCorp Cloud Platform (HCP).

As a Staff Engineer, your sphere of influence is primarily at the departmental and EPD level. You will lead a mix of execution and enablement work, being comfortable operating under ambiguity across multiple key priority initiatives. You will lead efforts to design, prototype, implement and operationally optimize features and tools, while ensuring consistent stability, performance and high-usability. All of our work is open source, so we collaborate with the open source community and many internal teams.

What you’ll do (responsibilities)

  • Work with our global CPS teams to develop next-generation Cloud Platform services for HashiCorp Cloud Platform
  • Partner with Engineering, Product and Design to enforce best practices for measurable quality and value within the platform
  • Cultivate excellence in the reliability, scalability, security, and craft of the software our team builds
  • Present insights and recommendations to drive data-driven decision-making
  • Spend time writing. At HashiCorp, we write extensively about engineering and customer functionality needs, potential solutions, and much more. A Request For Comment (RFC) document is the first step in developing a solution.
  • Engage open source contributors, promote healthy community engagement, and establish standards for effectively working in the open.
  • Provide code review, mentorship, and support to HashiCorp employees, community members, and partners.
  • Develop modern operationalization via tooling & automation capabilities for proactively monitoring and managing the customer experiences (Critical User Journeys) 
  • Contribute to company-wide initiatives led by our EPD management, recruitment, and people teams

What you’ll need (basic qualifications)

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering with experience with large-scale cloud solutions (AWS, Azure, GCP), including CICD-driven software development, testing and release management.
  • 8+ years of experience developing and supporting platform and Product/application services as part of a modern PAAS offering
  • 6+ years working with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and configuration management tools such as Terraform (preferred), CloudFormation, Pulumi, or Ansible.
  • 6+ years experience in modern IAM (Identity & Access Management) feature/function & enabling platform services
  • Strong functional knowledge of containers, container management, and container orchestration.
  • Understanding and familiarity with HashiCorp’s products, specifically Terraform, Nomad, Vault and Consul.
  • Strong understanding of automation, automation principles, and different aspects of pipelines and automation delivery.
  • Strong understanding of modern cloud security fundamentals, including patch management and secure configurations, with preferred experience in regulated environments.
  • Strong understanding of modern software delivery practices, including CICD (continuous integration and deployment/delivery) techniques and technologies
  • Strong cross functional collaboration and influencing skills, including the ability to influence with & without formal authority.

Individual pay within the range will be determined based on job related-factors such as skills, experience, and education or training.

The base pay range for this role in the SF Bay Area / NYC area is:
$246,200$289,600 USD
The base pay range for this role in California (excluding SF Bay Area), New York (excluding NYC), Seattle Metro, Denver / Boulder Metro, Washington D.C., or Maryland is:
$225,600$265,400 USD
The base pay range for this role in Colorado (excluding Denver / Boulder Metro), Illinois, Minnesota, or Washington (excluding Seattle Metro) is:
$205,100$241,300 USD
