Director, Engineering - Terraform Provider Ecosystem
About the Team
The Terraform Provider Ecosystem group, part of the Terraform Core Group at HashiCorp, is at the heart of advancing Infrastructure as Code by evolving Terraform as a product, language, and ecosystem. This group currently manages three of our most critical provider teams - AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform - representing approximately 20 engineers who maintain the backbone of Terraform's cloud integrations.
As our ecosystem rapidly evolves with new innovations like Terraform Stacks, agentic AI capabilities, and expanding partner opportunities, we need a Director to guide this group into its next phase of growth and impact. This role will support the evolution of provider development, help break down silos between teams, and guide this group into a role helping lead industry-impacting innovations.
You'll be leading three strong teams with existing managers, but the real opportunity is in connection: developing shared processes, tools, and strategies that allow these teams to collaborate more effectively with each other and with the broader organization. This is about scaling from individual team excellence to ecosystem-wide and enterprise-scale impact.
We're looking for a technical diplomat with experience harmonizing the areas of deep technical work and business strategy, building bridges between engineering teams, product management, partner alliances, and other stakeholders while advocating for the team's needs and priorities.
What you'll do...
Lead ecosystem strategy and innovation:
- Partner closely with Product Management and Design to develop and evangelize a cohesive vision for the provider ecosystem
- Navigate competing priorities from partners launching new products, evolving Terraform features, and growing demands of a rapidly-expanding customer base
- Support the team as innovation leaders, helping pilot new capabilities from incubation through internal adoption to market launch
- Leverage agentic AI opportunities to improve both internal development processes and create new product possibilities
- Nurture vibrant Open Source communities around our key Providers, encouraging outside contributors and drawing on the breadth of skill and experience in the community
Build organizational excellence:
- Develop shared processes, tools, and strategies across the AWS, Azure, and GCP provider teams
- Break down historical silos while maintaining team autonomy and expertise
- Scale the organization globally to support rapid growth in Terraform adoption
- Create clear visibility into team efforts, priorities, and resource allocation
Advocate and connect across (and outside) the organization:
- Serve as the primary connector (not buffer) between highly technical teams, open source communities, and business stakeholders
- Build and maintain relationships with Product Management, Partner Alliances, Support, and other key functions
- Translate technical complexity into business context and business needs into technical strategy
- Represent the team's work and celebrate their accomplishments across the organization
Foster team growth and resilience:
- Reduce stress and turnover by creating sustainable processes and clear priorities
- Support career development for managers and individual contributors
- Expand the team thoughtfully as scope and opportunities grow
- Build cross-team collaboration and mutual support
What you'll need...
- Director-level organizational leadership with proven ability to make wise tradeoffs between decisiveness and consensus building
- Excellent communication skills for working across time zones and building relationships with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Community leadership experience as a maintainer of active Open Source projects or as a community organizer, particularly in developer tools or infrastructure
- Stakeholder management expertise with experience partnering across product, engineering, business development, and support functions
- Process and scaling experience including breaking down silos, developing shared tools, and growing distributed teams
- Technical credibility to represent complex technical work at a business level while asking intelligent questions about system architecture
What's nice to have...
- Go programming experience and familiarity with cloud provider APIs
- Experience with Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools
- Background in developer tools or infrastructure software
- Global team leadership experience across multiple time zones
- Product management collaboration experience in technical organizations
- Partner ecosystem experience working with external developers and integrations
- Experience in at least one major Cloud Service Provider’s (AWS/Azure/Google) architecture and offerings
