Hybrid Terraform at Wayfair: Unifying your physical and cloud data centers

Wayfair infrastructure engineers and HUG community members Jeffrey Dillon and Irena Shashchuk give a talk on how their company leverages Terraform in heterogeneous infrastructure environments.

Wayfair uses most of the Hashicorp stack and found it powerful to have a single CI/CD pipeline for Terraform that can both deploy physical bare metal servers to their owned datacenter, VM's to their owned VCenter Cluster, and GCP instances to their public cloud expansion.

This talk goes into detail about how this pipeline works, how they audit it, how they balance burst traffic between on-prem and in cloud for extreme e-commerce type days. The talk also lists items they are open sourcing to help other companies who benefit from being hybrid by nature.

This talk was part of the first HashiTalks online event—A 24-hour continuous series of presentations from the worldwide HashiCorp User Group (HUG) community and from HashiCorp engineers as well. The event took place from February 21-22, 2019.
